The Stone Academy was built in 1809 and is the only public buildings of that era still in use. It was built to lure the state capital of Ohio from Chillicothe to Putnam but it was never used as a state capital. It was used as a church, courtroom, public meeting place, and from 1840 onward as a private home. The original structure is quite impressive and built of stone. The floors are Oak and have been under water twice when Zanesville has flooded. In addition to the building the museum houses pieces of furniture and art from the families that have occupied it. The building was used as the location for the Ohio Abolitionist Society's first meeting in 1836. That group wrote their constitution in this building. Many prominent people were at that meeting including Theodore Weld, James G. Birney, and other abolitionists. It has had at least two additions added over the years. The collection includes documents, art and artifacts from the local area. It is owned and run by the Pioneer and Historical Society of Muskingum County, Ohio.
